Community Building

The near-southeast side of Indianapolis is a densely-populated, historic cluster of neighborhoods, which have housed a mix of residences, commercial establishments, and manufacturers since the 1880s. This cluster of communities covers approximately five square miles and includes hundreds of churches, a rich mix of community organizations, many homes, and thriving businesses.

As a convener and community builder of the southeast side, SEND takes a grassroots approach alongside residents, assisting communities by elevating neighbors’ voices to activate the changes they desire to see in their neighborhoods. For this reason, SEND serves as convener in the Southeast Quality of Life Plan and South Indy Quality of Life Plan, and frequently attends neighborhood association meetings throughout all of the near southeast side. In addition, SEND worked together with the Twin Aire Neighborhood Coalition (TANC) to apply for, and subsequently receive, Twin Aire’s designation as a LISC 2020 Great Place. To learn more about the work being done through the Twin Aire strategic plan, check out the Twin Aire page. SEND also works with neighborhood associations and community partners, including Reconnecting to our Waterways and the Greater Virginia Avenue Corridor EID, to create and sustain a number of public spaces in Southeast including the Fountain Square Plaza and fountains, Barth Street Bridge, Fletcher Place Gateway.

SEND’s catchment area  is immediately bounded by East Washington Street to the north, Emerson Avenue to the east, Troy Avenue to the south, and the White River to the west. The area is trisected by I-65 and I-70, giving it easy access to the entire greater Indianapolis region.
