Barbara Bingham wasn’t sure exactly what her kids Cody, age 10, and Stephiny, age 8, needed. But she knew they weren’t getting it at their old school. Both kids required special education services. Neither was thriving in a traditional public school environment.

That’s when Barbara discovered Southeast Neighborhood School of Excellence (SENSE), the new SEND-area charter school. Both Cody and Stephiny were accepted into third grade at SENSE.

“There’s a huge difference,” Barbara said. “The small classes are wonderful for them. The teachers really know the kids and take the time to do what’s best for them.”

Sometimes, what’s best is helping when there’s been a family emergency. The Binghams’ home was destroyed in a fire early in 2005, and the school came to the rescue.

“They collected used clothing and other items to help the kids,” said Barbara. “It really helped us get back on our feet.”

And the kids are doing well. “Stephiny is so proud of herself. She’s making Cs on her own, and that’s a big accomplishment for her. And Cody is doing much better at SENSE. I’m blessed to have my kids there,” Barbara said.
